General information
The College of Social Science and Administration is an individual organisational unit of the Warsaw University of Techology, estabilished in 1997, carrying out both educational and research activities in the field of social science, realised at other Faculties of the University, and in its own undergraduate course in Administration.
Organisation
The College employs 67 full-time lecturers and 9 technical-administrative staff. It comprises the following divisions:
- The Division of Economics,
- The Division of Philosophy,
- The Division of Law and Administration,
- The Division of Sociology,
- The Division of History,
- Independent Position of Ergonomist.
Curriculum
The College offers a wide range of subjects to other Faculties of the University, with the curriculum modernised and modified systematically. The choice of subjects offered by the College, and the decision of their nature and length in the general curriculum, depends on the Faculty.
Currently the College offers 44 subjects in such fields as: macro- and microeconomics, the sociology of organisation, the sociology of housing, social psychology, law and management, philosophy, the history of technology, ergonomy and interdisciplinary curricula including the economic, sociological, philosophical, and legal aspects of the processes and strategy of European Integration.
The College also runs seminars and exams in economics and philosophy for PhD students. There are also training studies in ergonomy and safety of work, the pedagogy of work protection, and philosophy - "Modern didactics of philosophy at school", "Philosophical inquiries with children and adolescents".
The College of Social Science and Administration (CSSA) conducts the following courses in Administration:
- full-time undergraduate studies (6 semesters) leading to a BA degree,
- extra-mural undergraduate studies (6 semesters) leading to a BA degree.
The courses in Administration (for both kind of studies) aims at the preparation of specialists possessing technical qualifications together with knowledge and practical skills in the range of economics, law and other social sciences and humanities. The education process is focused on issues indispensable for work in interdisciplinary teams (mostly in management positions) in public service, town and territorial management, in the organisation of region and/or town promotion, as well as in cooperation between local authorities and investors, regarding the specifics of territorial authorities.
Research
The College carries out both theoretical and empirical research. Research topics include the economics and social aspects of Polish transformation processes and preparation for integration with the European Union, as well as the conditions of development in science and technology.
On the basis of the Jean Monnet project the following interdisciplinary works in development, modification and implementation are carried out:
- didactics: European Studies - the strategy of integration,
- research: European awareness among the Polish technical intellectual class.
Economics research comprises:
- the economic role of the State in the economy transformation period,
- structural changes in the market economy,
- social and technical innovations in the economy,
- human resources in social and economic development,
- economics aspects of environment protection.
Sociological research is focused on:
- the sociological aspects of the education structure and education in polytechnics (universities of technology),
- the sociological problems of housing in Poland,
- the social problems of the country and agriculture in the transformation period,
- the role of the Polish Parliament in the III Polish Republic.
Legal research includes:
- models of emloyee participation in company management,
- the legal aspects of the development of local and territorial authorities,
- the student situation in the social and economic development of Poland.
Philosophical research topics are:
- the history of philosophy connected with research methodology, ethics and the theory of values,
- the philosophy of culture, with particular emphasis on religion and the philosophy of technical civilisation,
- the philosophy of science and technology with selected problems of ecology.
Historical research includes:
- the history of Polish university technical schools and education,
- the history of Warsaw urban development.
Ergonomic research comprises:
- toxicological and other menaces of the workplace,
- ergonomic didactics for students of university technical schools.
International cooperation
The College cooperates with the following institutes in the fields of information, didactic materials, and students exchange, and participates in research projects with:
- Technische Hochschule of Darmstadt, Germany,
- The International Graduate School of Management, University of Navarra, Barcelona, Spain,
- The Technical University of Budapest, Hungary,
- The Institute of Mechanical Power Engineering, Moscow, Russia,
- The Australian Catholic University, Sydney, Australia.
