First place for students of the SAE Student Research Group in the Aero Design East 2011 Competition
The team from Warsaw University of Technology won a prestigious competition Aero Design East 2011 in Marietta, in the vicinity of Atlanta in the USA. The competition took place on 30 April – 1 May 2011.
The annual competition, organized by SAE International, brings together students from nearly 80 teams from all over the world. It is co-organised by Lockheed Martin, one of the largest aircraft companies in the world. Members of the Student Interfaculty Research Group SAE took the first place in the Advanced class in general classification, the first place for the highest payload lifted, the third place for the technical presentation and the third place for the DAS system.
With the plane’s own weight of only 4.5kg, the structure called Evolution (a thorough evolution of last year’s winning project) lifted the payload of 18.5kg! The US competition was attended by 12 people, though the project was completed by nearly 30 members of the Group, who are all fathers of its success. The students are coming back to Poland from Chicago on 11 May, at 14:15 by the flight no 0004 (PLL LOT).
This year’s success is a perfect crowning achievement for the 20th anniversary of the Group’s participation in the Aero Design competition.
