”Girls to technical universities” – Open Day at Warsaw University of Technology
On the 23rd of April 2009, 15 technical universities in Poland held an open day Only for girls.
Women – and women only! – could learn about the favourite technical universities from their feminine side: talk to female students, female engineers, see scientific laboratories, learn why it is worth getting interested in technical studies. The universities also prepared additional attractions – debates, trips and competitions.
The action ”Girls to technical universities” is a joint project of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Technical Universities and the Educational Charity Perspektywy. Its aim is to encourage secondary school female students to undertake engineering studies, especially at strictly scientific specialisations – the most wanted, future-oriented ones, which open doors to the international job market.
Experiences of other European countries (”Girls Day” – Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and the United States (”Women in Engineering” and others) clearly show that promoting studies at technical universities among women has a profound influence on their educational choices. It is worth adding that such actions increase the interest in technical studies in general, also among men.
