Warsaw University of Technology: entertains, teaches, inspires!

Interactive shows, presentations of inventions from the world of technical sciences, a surprise for Star Wars fans, concerts and performances – these are just a few of the attractions prepared by Warsaw University of Technology for visitors as part of the University celebration, this year on 15-27 November.

Day of Warsaw University of Technology
15 November is one of the most important days in the events calendar of Warsaw University of Technology. This year’s celebrations are connected with the 95th  anniversary of the University. To commemorate this, University authorities, graduates, student self-government and scientific research groups have planned a number of various events over several days. The celebrations will be taking place in the Main Building and at the University Campus on 15-27 November. Detailed information and programme are available at www.pw.edu.pl/dzienpw .

Towards tradition and science
An exhibition “Power Engineering in the 21st  Century” (15 November, 10:00) and a seminar “New Technologies – Inspiration for Engineers” (16 November, 16:00) are connected with modern research, interesting scientific facts. The presentations also demonstrate practical applications of science in everyday life. Enthusiasts, as well as everyone interested in the mysteries of science, will be able to learn: how to drive 100 kilometres on one litre of fuel? Are nuclear power plants dangerous? And can electrical energy be transmitted in another way than by wires? Student research groups will have their contribution to promotion of science; during a picnic (20 November, 10:00-16:00) outside the Main Building of Warsaw University of Technology they will present their inventions, e.g. Quadocopter, a laser maze and a 3D window. The exhibition will include experiments which can be conducted by participants during their “encounter” with science.

An exhibition devoted to professor Antoni Xiężopolski (15 November, 11:00) and a photo gallery of the first design of Warsaw University of Technology are connected with the formation of University structures. Professor Xiężopolski created the Chair of Railway Engines Design, thus starting the development of the Polish School of Railways at the later founded Faculty of Automotive and Construction Machinery Engineering. The exhibition will present old-fashioned machines and devices connected with railways. The gallery entitled “Creation – Expansion – Reconstruction. History of the University in Three Acts” (15 November, 15:00) is a chance to become familiar with the original appearance of the University Main Building – from its erection through the process of its expansion and modernization. The photos are also an attempt at recreating the process of reconstruction of the building destroyed after the 2nd  world war.

The University has a Theatre (20-21 November, Club of the Faculty of Architecture)
This year the WUT Theatre celebrates its 5th  anniversary;  it is one of the artistic symbols of the University. This time a play “Russian Sighs” has been prepared, based on four one-act plays by Chekhov (“The Bear”, “The Jubilee”, “A Marriage Proposal” and “The Wedding”). The play is intertwined with modern Russian songs, unusually arranged for the purposes of this special performance.

Music and dance at the University
This year’s musical events are connected with the Chopin Year celebrations. A concert “Chopin at Warsaw University of Technology” will take place on 27 November in the magnificent Great Hall of Warsaw University of Technology. Piano pieces will be performed by Krzysztof Jabłoński, winner of the Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. He will be accompanied by the Symphonic Orchestra of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, the Song and Dance Company of WUT, Małgorzata Polanowska – soprano, Piotr Halicki – baritone.

Elections of Miss and Mister of Warsaw University of Technology (15 November, 18:00)
This event is organised under the auspices of the Miss Polonia Office and of Warsaw University of Technology Rector. It is preceded by eliminations at each of the 20 faculties, as well as rehearsals and all-year-long preparations. Careful preparation of the event fills the WUT Great Hall with people. What attracts them is beautiful original choreography and music provided by invited guests (recently i.a. Stanisław Soyka) and a music band operating at the University – The Engineers Band. Five years of the project has secured the position of the event in the calendar of academic cultural events not only at the University but also in Warsaw.

The elections of Miss and Mister are not only a chance to decide who is the most beautiful woman and the most handsome man at the University, but also great fun with rock’n’roll and 1960s music.

Warsaw University of Technology open to Warsaw (20 November, 10:00-14:00; assembly point outside the Main Building of Warsaw University of Technology – Pl. Politechniki)
For those who have not had a chance yet to see the WUT Main Building there is a guided tour – on the trail of historical and modern discoveries. Hungry (not only for experience) participants will be able to join a barbecue.

All events are open to the public for free or upon free entry tickets. For details visit www.pw.edu.pl .
