Aim of project
The purpose of the project is to develop a method of fixation of CO2 in the form of inorganic carbonates, known as “mineral carbonation” or “mineral sequestration”. In the process of mineral carbonation, captured CO2 is reacted with metal-oxide containing materials, forming corresponding carbonates and a solid by-product, for example silica. In nature such a process is called weathering and it is very slow; it involves minerals and atmospheric CO2. The aim of the project is to develop the method that accelerates the natural process of weathering.
Expected results
An analysis based on material, energy and cost balances and experimental investigations being the main part of investigation should enable process identification and optimization of process conditions. Application of scale up methods should enable development of the brief fore-design for running the process of mineral carbonation on an industrial scale.
