Aim of project
The project is focused on direct analysis of chemical air pollution within the impact zone of ten objects being potential odorant sources. The evaluation includes objects linked with sewage and waste management, and with livestock breeding. EM-WORLD Polska has applied the copyrighted method “Kwadrant-EkosystEM” to reduce or eliminate odour nuisance of organic origin, caused e.g. by livestock breeding objects, sewage treatment plants, composting plants and waste dumps.

EM-WORLD Polska realizes the project entitled “Preparation and introduction to the market of an innovative service of removing smells from environment, production and livestock breeding buildings based on effective microorganisms” in the frame of the Sectoral Operational Programme — Improvement of the Competitiveness of Enterprises (2004–2006), Priority 1 “Development of enterprise and increase of innovation policy through enhancement of institutions from the business environment” (Project 1.4 “Enhancement of cooperation with research institutes”) accepted by the Department of European Funds of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education on 31.05.2007.

The aim of the project is presentation of data on the quality of air after application of agents containing “effective microorganisms”. The team from the Faculty of Environmental Engineering (Warsaw University of Technology) has made the attempt to study the influence of odorants (gases causing offensive smell nuisance) in 10 objects: sewage treatment plant in Łomianki, compositing plant at Radiowo (Warsaw), waste dump in Suchożebry/Dębe, and seven agricultural objects in the Płońsk area, including four livestock breeding buildings (cow-shed, stable, pig and poultry houses).

Expected results
The range of the project encompasses 42 series of analyses made during 4 months, i.e. from October 2007 till February 2008. Field studies take into account the possible variability of technological, meteorological and microclimatic conditions within the four-month interval.

Field and laboratory analyses allow to draw the following
conclusions:
Rather univocal results have been obtained only in the case of the sewage screenings waste dump (Łomianki sewage treatment plant), where the EM agent was applied as injections to deposit and percolation of its surface. Distinct decrease of the content of the analyzed pollutants was observed during the study period;

Possible continuation of studies should be connected with very precise control of EM agent dosage and technological works in the object infl uencing the value of odorant emission. Control of exploitation conditions, e.g. ventilation of facilities, is also indispensable.

It is reasonable to postulate:

Extension of studies on odorometric (olfactometry) determinations;

conduction of analysis during the warm season (between May and September).
