Aim of project
The overall objective of STEPS is to introduce a systematic approach to Tissue Engineering and associated technologies. STEPS aims to provide a totally new infrastructure for TE, by systematically transforming all aspects of this multi-disciplinary process and applying the logistics of systems engineering to link them together in an integrated system.

Expected results

The project will be a breakthrough of the synthesis of new generation of innovative materials/scaff olds using appropriate novel 2D and 3D fabrication or assembly processes (at the nano-, micro- and macro-scale), and precise tailoring of the material physical and biological properties, in order to achieve a desired clinical response through modulation of cellular responses;

The project will be a breakthrough of cell sourcing, cell cultivation issues using rigorous characterization of the molecular signals/pathways relevant to cell plasticity, propagation and control of differentiation, both in vitro and in vivo;

STEPS will be a breakthrough of the translation of producing functional cells and tissues in the laboratory to large-scale production of safe, reproducible tissues that are clinically appropriate.

This will require technologies to initiate cell proliferation under conditions that maintain phenotypes in upstream bioprocessing (bioreactors) a move from resource intensive to knowledge-based delivery.
