Glider flight simulator

Date: 20 September 08, Saturday 09:00 - 21 September 16:00

Institute of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics of Warsaw University of Technology, Nowowiejska 24
Robert Młot

The classes take place from 16:00 – everyone interested can join in at any time.

Participants will be able to fly in a glider flight simulator. At the same time: discussion of flight rules and of flight mechanics of an aircraft.

The Earth is a planet of people who, thanks to their technical creativity, could leave the ground, which has always been a desire of humankind. Many members of the Scientific Circle of Aeronautical Engineers fly gliders and planes so they know it well. The simulator helps them to improve their flying skills – such as training of making correct turns.

Show of visualization in an aerodynamic tunnel

Date: 20 September 08, Saturday 09:00 - 21 September 16:00

Institute of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics of Warsaw University of Technology, Nowowiejska 24
Krzysztof Błasiak

A meeting organized in cooperation with the Association of Young Aeronautical Engineers. The show ends at 16:00.

Air in the service of people. How is it possible that a plane weighing a few tonnes leaves the ground? How does air act around us, our houses and cars? Can we talk about the Earth, the planet of people and forget about its very important part – air which surrounds everything? These and other questions will be answered by the Association of Young Aeronautical Engineers. Thanks to a self-designed aerodynamic tunnel we can see the air and the way it acts around a flying plane, a driving car and even… a building on a windy day.

Date: 27 September 08, Saturday 10:00 - 11:45

Institute of Materials Technologies, Narbutta 85
Dariusz Golański, Ph.D., Paweł Cegielski, Ph.D.

The show of robot welding will be conducted on a laboratory stand equipped with a number of modern technological devices. The most important of them is a universal technological robot IRp-6 produced by ZAP - Robotyka S.A. Ostrów Wlkp. It has five independently controlled axes (degrees of freedom), high repeatability and precision of positioning (+- 0,2 mm). An additional sixth degree of freedom of the stand is a continually-operated positioner installed on a common stand.

As a welding electricity source, a specialist device produced by ESAB has been used. It is controlled by a computer system placed in a separate cubicle. The control system is equipped with a unique computer system based on an industrial PC panel with an active control screen.
During the show there will be a presentation of robot welding in gaseous envelope using the MAG method, connected with active participation of the audience. There will be an explanation of basic robotics terms, including the structure and operation of the most important devices on the stand. During the explanation, participants will be able to control the model themselves.

Date: 27 September 08, Saturday 11:00 - 12:45

The Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering of Warsaw University of Technology, Wołoska 141
Jerzy Latuch, Ph.D.

Modern technology enables production of new materials of unique properties. Such a group of materials are metallic glasses, i.e. metallic alloys of the structure of normal window glass, exhibiting extraordinary magnetic or mechanical properties. At the same time, they are a basic material for obtaining nanocrystalline materials. The participants of the show will witness subsequent stages of the process of manufacturing metallic glass and then they will evaluate their basic physical properties themselves. They will all take home a-few-centimetre-long parts of the produced metallic glass.

It is said that modern medicine does miracles. But would this be possible without the support of technology? Not really. One example of such help for doctors is making different types of endoprostheses of joints by engineers. Thanks to them, a few thousand people a year in Poland can recover and regain their normal activity.

Guests who will come to the event will be able to see the structure of different types of endoprostheses and learn what materials they are made of. The programme also includes short animations which show schematically the course of a surgery of inserting an endoprosthesis.

Strongest magnets

Date: 27 September 08, Saturday 11:00 - 12:45

The Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering of Warsaw University of Technology, Wołoska 141, room 019
prof. Waldemar Kaszuwara, Ph.D., D.Sc.

Hard magnetic materials – magnets – are in many everyday objects: in houses, cars, we often have them with us, e.g. in engines of watches. We take no notice of them because they are often hidden in miniature engines, earphones or loudspeakers. Only 20 years ago these devices were not so small. Rapid miniaturization started when strong Nd-Fe-B magnets were obtained (1984). They made use of excellent magnetic properties of the phase Nd2Fe14B. It is not enough, however, to select the contents of these three elements correctly to make an alloy a strong magnet. It also needs to obtain a microstructure which will make the material after magnetizing a source of constant magnetic field. Nowadays the value of the world production of these materials is almost half of the value of production of all magnets. Strong magnets are constantly finding new applications. The participants of the presentation will be able to learn about the secrets of production of Nd-Fe-B magnets, check their strength themselves and see their present and future applications.

How do animals move in air or water?

Date: 27 September 08, Saturday 11:00 - 12:45

Institute of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics of Warsaw University of Technology, Nowowiejska 24
Janusz Piechna

For millions of years nature has not invented the rotary bearing. Animals can only make swinging motion with their limbs. Because of these limitations they have developed various, unknown in technical solutions, methods of obtaining aerodynamic lift and driving force enabling them to move freely in air or water.

The lecture presents, in the visual form (graphics and short films), information about the ways in which birds, insects and bats fly and whales and fish swim.

Networks of sensors monitoring the environment

Date: 27 September 08, Saturday 13:00 - 14:00

Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology of Warsaw University of Technology, Nowowiejska 15/19
prof. Andrzej Filipkowski

The environment on the Earth is becoming more and more polluted as a result of the activity of the human. The greatest authorities on all continents are trying to prevent its degradation. The basis of effective prevention of contamination is monitoring – of water, soil, air, noise and electromagnetic and corpuscular radiation. These purposes are served by specialist sensors, connected in an IT network with appropriate software. Measuring probes are placed on the ground, on planes and on satellites. The realization of this task is an interdisciplinary issue.

Fairs of Scientific Circles and Student Organizations

Date: 21 October 08, Tuesday 10:00 - 22 October 17:00

On 21-22 October, the Main Building of Warsaw University of Technology will host the fifth edition of ”Konik” Fairs of Scientific Circles and Student Organizations. The event will be held under the honorary patronage of the Rector of Warsaw University of Technology, Włodzimierz Kurnik and the Mazowsze Chief Education Officer, Karol Semik.

The “Konik” Fairs are the biggest event of this type at Warsaw University of Technology. Over the two days of fairs, ca. 50 most active Scientific Circles and Student Organizations will show their scope of activities. There will also be a presentation of WUT Media, which have received a special common platform.

The Fairs have been planned in such a way that each participant can find something for themselves and “palpably” check the performance of various interesting models. A thematic, colorful division into sectors will make it easier to visit stands. A large number of cases and competitions will be conducted by different units. We will be able to see the progress of work of young scientists and to look into their scientific projects. On a large screen there will be a show of films and reports on student expeditions and projects made by the WUT Internet Television (WUTTV).

Members of Scientific Circles and Student Organizations will enjoy additional attractions. In the evening, on the eve of the Fairs, there will be an integration game thanks to which, like in a western, participants will be able to gain additional skills of moving around a maze of red tape. In the evening on the second day of the Fairs, after the official closing of the event, you are invited to the Babilon Club, where in the climate and outfits from the Wild West we will have fun till the crack of dawn.

During “Konik”, a competition will be held for the most attractive stand of a Scientific Circle and Student Organization and the audience award will also be given.
