The Faculty of Transport continues the academic and scientific tradition of the former Faculty of Transport and Communications, which was established at the Warsaw University of Technology in 1948. The Faculty is housed partly in a historic building erected at the beginning of the 20th century and partly on the University Southern Campus.
Transport studies are characterised by a comprehensive approach to the problems of analysis and design of transport networks, means of transport maintenance and traffic control. The education is based on transportation system science, which integrates infrastructure, the technical means of transport, organisation and control problems.
Faculty graduates are well prepared for a creative engineering career in public and industrial transport enterprises, in teams designing national or city transport systems or in teams designing factory storage and transport systems for production or service enterprises. Likewise, they are ready for careers in scientific research in the field of transport. They form an elite group of engineers working in all fields of the economy where problems concerning transportation of passengers and freight may occur.
Student enrolment at the Faculty is approximately 300 annually and the total number of students is about 970 full-time students, about 600 extra-mural BSc-equivalent course students and about 180 postgraduates taking an extra-mural course leading to an MSc degree. The extra-mural course lasts 4 semesters and is intended for postgraduates of first or second class higher technical studies wishing to gain their MSc in Transport.
The Faculty employs an academic staff of 150, including 14 professors, 7 associate professors and 39 assistant professors with PhDs. These are supported by 41 technical and administrative staff. The Faculty of Transport is the only scientific institution in Poland, which may confer the title of doktor nauk technicznych equivalent to a PhD degree and the title of doktor habilitowany equivalent to the Doctor of Science degree in the field of Transport.
The Faculty is divided into eleven divisions:
The Faculty also houses various specialised laboratories, a computer centre and a specialised library.
The following types of studies are available at the Faculty of Transport:
Full-time MSc degree courses and extra-mural BSc degree courses are offered in 3 subjects, with a choice of 8 specialisations:
The Logistics and Technology of Transport:
Traffic Control:
Vehicle Maintenance and Operation and Transport Devices:
Automotive Vehicle Maintenance and Operation.
The first two years of study cover a common syllabus for all students of Transport. Specialisations are chosen at the start of the third year, but there is also the opportunity to study according to an individually tailored programme. The availability of the specialisations offered on the full-time MSc degree course is dependent on the number of candidates and the demand. The Faculty also offers a 2-semester postgraduate course covering new technology in traffic control and transport in a market economy.
The Faculty of Transport conducts research, which is of direct relevance to transport problems and to certain areas of machine construction and operation. Research concentrates on the fundamentals of rational organisation and optimisation of transport systems in all areas of the economy, with the exception of marine and inland waterway transport. The main research areas include:
The Faculty's international cooperation includes joint research with the following foreign scientific institutions:
