General information

The Faculty of Civil Engineering, Mechanics and Petrochemistry in its present form has functioned since 1983 when it was transformed from the Affiliate Branch of the Warsaw University of Technology. It currently offers four fields of full-time and extra-mural studies for about 2200 students (civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanics and construction of machines and chemical technology) and the number of students is steadily growing.

Statistically in recent years over 320 students were enrolled for the first year of full-time study leading to the degree of magister inżynier (equivalent to an MSc degree), which take 5 years, and over 200 for the first year of extra-mural undergraduate studies leading to the degree of inżynier (equivalent to a BSc, Bachelor of Engineering degree), which take 4.5 years.

The Faculty also organises postgraduate studies. The Faculty of Civil Engineering, Mechanics and Petrochemistry has the authority to confer the degree of doktor nauk technicznych equivalent to a PhD degree in the fields of civil engineering and construction and use of machinery.

Tutorials, seminars, lectures and research work are conducted by 154 academic teachers among whom there are 25 professors, 1 associate professor and 56 assistant professors and 44 assistant technical staff.

The library of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Mechanics and Petrochemistry, a Branch of the Main Library of the Warsaw University of Technology, serves not only the Faculty but also engineers and technicians from the Płock region. This Library has a collection of over 70000 volumes, subscribes to numerous scientific journals, collects standards, catalogues and other library printed matter.

Organisation

The Faculty is divided into three institutes:

  • The Institute of Civil Engineering,
  • The Institute of Chemistry,
  • The Institute of Agricultural Machines and Facilities.

The institutes are subdivided into divisions (for teaching) and teams (for research). The Faculty also comprises inter-institute units, consisting of 4 subdivisions. They are:

  • The Mathematics and Fundamentals of Information Technology Unit,
  • The Physics Unit,
  • The Foreign Languages Unit,
  • The Physical Education and Sports Unit.

Curriculum

The Faculty offers four fields of full-time and extra-mural study:
Civil Engineering, with specialisation in:

  • Building Structures and Engineering (General Building and Engineering, Municipal Housing Engineering).

Environmental Engineering, with specialisation in:

  • Sanitary Equipment (Sewage and Water Supply Systems, Heating and Ventilation Systems in Buildings, Waste Disposal and Waste Utilisation).

The Mechanics and Construction of Machinery, with specialisations in:

  • Business Economic, Engineering,
  • Mechanical Systems and Automation,
  • Machinery and Equipment for the Chemical and Food-Processing Industries.

Chemical Technology, with specialisation in:

  • Chemical Organic Technology (Petrochemical Technology, The Technology of Polymers).

Full-time studies last 5 years, at the end of which time students submit and defend their MSc dissertation. Students of extra-mural courses end their studies after 4.5 years and defend their BSc diploma dissertation.

Over the last few years both the curriculum and teaching methods at all the faculties have been revised. They are now based mainly on recently introduced computer technology with applications for: solving technical problems, organisation and management of companies, introducing ecological problems to professional studies and improving the effectiveness of foreign language courses (particularly English and German). These latest educational improvements have resulted in the introduction of new specialisations and fields of study.

Research

Research projects conducted at the Faculty are closely related to the needs of the Płock region. The Institute of Civil Engineering conducts research in:

  • the properties of building materials, elements and their connections,
  • new technologies in building engineering,
  • the design and theoretical analysis of building constructions,
  • the study of framework structures with small-scale element infilling,
  • water supply, sewerage and sewerage systems for rural and urban waste,
  • building physics and building installations,
  • the technology of potable water production, the neutralisation of rural and urban waste,
  • biotechnology in environmental protection,
  • low-energy buildings and energy savings.

The Institute of Chemistry conducts research in the following areas:

  • the thermal dissociation of solids,
  • adsorbents - their texture and the chemical properties of their surface,
  • the mechanisms of tribochemical reactions,
  • the chemistry and technology of bitumen - polymer systems (from the petrochemical and carbochemical industry),
  • physicochemical changes in concrete mixed with various additives,
  • the synthesis of ashless biodegradable additives for fuels and lubricating oils,
  • the synthesis of high-octane components of fuels in the presence of a new generation catalyst,
  • the removal of cancerogenous policyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from bitumen substances.
  • the utilisation of by-products and wastes of the polymer and petrochemical industry,
  • the preparation of antifreezes for cooling systems in motor vehicles.

The Institute of Agricultural Machines and Facilities conducts research in:

  • materials engineering,
  • the optimisation of machine design and production technology,
  • entrepreneurship,
  • the design and operation of machinery and equipment for both the food-processing and chemical industries,
  • the design, production, operation and reliability of agricultural machines and equipment,
  • bio-agricultural system engineering.

The inter-institute units do research in the following fields:

  • statistical and computational analysis in experimental data,
  • the testing of elementary particles at high energies.

International cooperation

The Faculty cooperates with various foreign partners both in academic and scientific fields. The Faculty collaborates with many institutions on the basis of long-term agreements. The most distinguished of these include:

The cooperation with these institutions is conducted through joint projects in the fields of education and research, exchange programmes embracing research staff and students, scientific publications and mutual participation in symposia.

At Present, the Faculty participates in the COPERNICUS research project "Minimisation of energy and water use in sugar production by clean technology based on cooling crystallisation", and the students exchange programmes SOCRATES and LEONARDO.
