Day of Warsaw University of Technology

On the 15th of November 1915 at 13.00, in the Building of Physics of Warsaw University of Technology, the act of opening the University took place. The Main Building served then as a military hospital. From that moment on, the University has functioned under the name: Warsaw University of Technology, with Polish as the language of tuition. Before that day, its name had been the Polytechnic Institute of Tsar Nikolas the Second and tuition had been conducted in Russian. On the 90th anniversary of the event, the Senate of Warsaw University of Technology established the 15th of November the Day of Warsaw University of Technology.

This year, for the first time, our celebrations will be held on Saturday and so we cordially invite all inhabitants of Warsaw and Mazowsze to participate in the celebrations. And they will be intensive and varied. There will be traditional elements, such as a ceremonial session of the WUT Senate, sports, entertainment, cultural and, of course, scientific elements, as benefits the best technical university in Poland.

The most important event, which in our opinion will attract the attention of large numbers of people, will be the exhibition devoted to the commissioning of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) built at the laboratory of the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN in Geneva, thanks to the efforts of circa 5000 physicists from all over the world, including our scientists from the Faculty of Physics of Warsaw University of Technology. The LHC Collider is a huge and unprecedented scientific event. The exhibition organized in the Hall of the Faculty of Physics of Warsaw University of Technology will highlight the contribution of our scientists, as well as the uniqueness of this technological achievement. The exhibition can be seen until 23 November. In 2009, because of its educational and cognitive benefits, the exhibition will be presented in 9 Polish cities, though in a ”condensed” version, which includes circa 50% of exhibits. The full exhibition can be seen only here, at the WUT Faculty of Physics.

In front of the Main Building, in a large tent, there will be a presentation of scientific circles, active at the University. Passionate students do incredible things there and truly have something to be proud of. A car exhibition, ranging from old, practically museum exhibits to the most modern ones, will be prepared by the Faculty of Automotive and Construction Machinery Engineering.

The Faculty of Chemistry will open its doors to young chemists – lectures for the youth connected with visits to laboratories will definitely seem to be interesting fun rather than learning. The lecture for students of high schools, entitled ”Electronic nose and tongue”, will be given by prof. Wojciech Wróblewski, Ph.D., D.Sc. – the youngest professor of WUT.

All day long, the employees of the WUT Museum will be guiding visitors around Warsaw University of Technology and its historic buildings on the Main Campus.

It has become a tradition to hold a race for the WUT Rector’s Cup. It takes place at the University stadium (entrance from Batorego street), with students and employees as contestants.

A moment of relaxation and refreshment will be offered at the barbecue on the yard of the Main Building next to the Main Library. At the Library itself, an exhibition entitled ”We are learning… student’s books, laboratory equipment, e-sources” can be seen.

The evening will be spent at the Main Hall of the Main Building. Here the final ceremony of the elections of the Miss and Mister of Warsaw University of Technology will take place. The programme includes a presentation of the most beautiful and the most handsome students of the University and a concert of ”The Engineers Band”.

A detailed programme will be sent at a later date. Nevertheless, please accept my warm initiation.
