At the turn of July and August, the Centre for Advanced Materials and Technologies CEZAMAT at Warsaw University of Technology hosted a Polish-American summer school organized by the Ministry of Industry and the United States Department of Energy, as part of the Regional Energy Training Center (RETC) initiative.
The training, centered around the theme “Nuclear safety”, was attended by 54 students from 7 universities, including representatives from the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology.
During classes led by specialists from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, students learned about issues related to nuclear safety. Classes on the AP 1000 reactor were conducted by a representative of Westinghouse. This was followed by meetings with representatives of the National Atomic Energy Agency, Polish Nuclear Power Plants, and the Office of Technical Inspection. The week-long training concluded with a study visit to the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ). Students had the opportunity to learn about NCBJ's activities and to see the MARIA research reactor.
Additionally, on the first day of the summer school, representatives of the participating technical universities (Warsaw University of Technology, AGH University of Krakow, Lodz University of Technology, Poznan University of Technology, Silesian University of Technology, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, and the University of Warsaw) met with representatives of the Ministry and the U.S. delegation to discuss plans for further activities under the RETC initiative.
