Researchers from the Warsaw University of Technology – Anna Jackiewicz-Zagórska, PhD, and Prof. Jarosław Milewski – have been selected as recipients of the Fulbright STEM Impact Award. The programme is aimed at active researchers representing STEM fields who are employed at Polish academic or research institutions. During the six-week scholarship period, the awardees carry out their own research or research and teaching project and gain knowledge in areas such as science commercialisation and grant proposal writing at a selected institution in the United States.

Dr Anna Jackiewicz-Zagórska from the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology represents the field of chemical engineering. She will carry out her project at the University of Minnesota, one of the world’s leading centres for filtration research. Her six-week stay will include research work and cooperation with industry partners associated with the Centre for Filtration Research.

“The project I will carry out under the Fulbright STEM Impact Award concerns modern methods for predicting the behaviour of air filters during real operation, meaning under conditions of gradual loading with aerosol particles. In my research, I will combine classical experimental methods and advanced imaging diagnostics with machine learning tools that make it possible to forecast changes in filter efficiency and pressure drop over the course of their use. The main aim of the project is to develop tools that support the design of filters with longer service life, higher efficiency and a reduced environmental impact, for example by limiting the frequency of replacement and the amount of waste generated. The results may benefit sectors connected with air and gas filtration, in particular the HVAC industry, the automotive sector, the energy industry, environmental protection and manufacturers of personal protective equipment,” says Dr Jackiewicz-Zagórska.

Prof. Jarosław Milewski from the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering represents the field of environmental engineering, mining and energy. He will spend six weeks at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).

“The project carried out under the Fulbright STEM Impact Award 2025–26 concerns research on advanced energy technologies, in particular hydrogen systems and fuel cells (dynamic models of electrolysers and their integration with power grids), in cooperation with the Institute of Advanced Power and Energy Programme at the University of California, Irvine. The project involves a short-term six-week research visit that includes conducting research, possible lectures, seminars and training in the commercialisation of results and grant proposal writing. The aim is to develop models and solutions for sustainable energy, including the production and use of hydrogen as an energy carrier. The outcomes may benefit the energy sector – fuel cell manufacturers, grid operators, the hydrogen industry – as well as climate policy, for example through the reduction of CO₂ emissions thanks to clean technologies,” explains Prof. Milewski.
