Is it possible to present complex scientific research in just three minutes in a way that engages and inspires the audience? The participants of the Three Minute Thesis® competition at Warsaw University of Technology have once again proven that it is!

The Three Minute Thesis® (3MT) is an international competition in which doctoral candidates present the essence of their research in a short, three-minute format. The presentations cannot be supported by multimedia or props, and participants are allowed only one static slide. The format requires full focus on the message, plain language, and the ability to engage an audience unfamiliar with the field.

Ten doctoral candidates representing a wide range of scientific disciplines took part in the final held at Warsaw University of Technology. Their presentations were evaluated by a jury consisting of ViceRector for Science Prof. Mariusz Malinowski, Director of the Doctoral School Prof. Aneta Pobudkowska-Mirecka, Prof. Wojciech Wróbel, and science journalist Radosław Brzózka.

Results

The highest-rated presentation was delivered by Natalia Mikos Nuszkiewicz from the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering, titled “Tempting but Complex: The Quest for Long-Term and Compact Heat Storage”. Second place went to Aleksandra Godlewska from the Faculty of Chemistry for her presentation “Breaking Barriers in Antimicrobial Resistance – Understanding the Mechanisms of Action Behind Membrane-Targeting Antimicrobials”, and third place to Emeka Chijioke from the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering who presented the topic “Making Electric Drones Fly Longer with Smarter Control and Cleaner Missions”.

The special jury award went to Antoni Wadowski from the Faculty of Materials Engineering for his presentation “Machine Learning Potential for Metallic Glasses”. In turn, the audience – both those present in the room and those watching online – awarded their vote to Emilia Wdowiak from the Faculty of Mechatronics for her presentation “Development of Wide Field-of-View Lensless Holographic Microscopy”.
