On June 1, 2025, the Centre for Credible AI (CCAI) officially commenced operations at Warsaw University of Technology (WUT). This new research unit addresses the critical need to develop AI systems that are not only effective but also transparent, controllable, and verifiable. The Centre is led by Prof. Przemysław Biecek from the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science.
As a university-wide initiative, the Centre for Credible AI focuses on advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems and solutions that prioritize safety, explainability, transparency, and reliability.
"In this era of rapid progress in generative AI, we need independent, interdisciplinary hubs that bridge cutting-edge technical research with analysis of its societal, economic, and legal implications," says Prof. Przemysław Biecek, the Centre’s Scientific Director. "This isn’t just a concept – it’s a world-class research hub. Our team publishes at top-tier AI/ML conferences like NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ECCV, ECAI, and ECML, working at the intersection of computer science, mathematics, data engineering, social sciences, and health sciences. Trustworthy AI demands both technical rigor and domain-specific validation."
Mission: Building Responsible AI
The Centre aims to develop AI systems that are understandable – using explainable AI and interpretability techniques, verifiable – through formal testing and risk assessment mechanisms, and controllable – via mechanisms like SAE or values-aligned design. The unit will conduct research projects, develop open tools, and support education for the next generation of credible AI specialists.
Core Responsibilities of CCAI include:
– Methodology Development
– Implementation
– Infrastructure Growth
CCAI accomplishes its goals by proposing new methods for validation and knowledge extraction from AI models, advancing them towards practical applications and commercialization – offering a complete value chain of competencies. Additionally, it creates standards, recommendations, and best practices for AI model audits aimed at the business and economic sectors in Poland and globally. The Centre also acquires new project funding and collaborates with other units working in similar or complementary areas.
The Centre was established under the "International Research Agendas" programme, funded by European Funds for a Modern Economy 2021-2027 (MAB FENG).More details about the project are available in the related article.
