Marek Kania from the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineerign is the champion and bronze medalist of Europe in speed skating! During the competitions in Heerenveen in the Netherlands he won the gold medal in team sprint and came third in the 500m individual race.

The Polish team (consisting of Marek Kania, Piotr Michalski and Damian Żurek) left behind, for example, Norwegians and the expected winners of the race – the Dutch contestants. Our sprinters did not just win but they also made a new record of Poland and track record (it is also the best result in the world on low-land tracks) – 1,18.31.

– The round of honour with the flag and standing ovation with the full hall, the Polish anthem sung from the top place on the podium – AMAZING! – Marek Kania commented on his success on his Facebook profile

Our student has had one more reason for happiness – he completed the individual 500m race with the time of 34.86, which was the third result. Better than him were only Jenning De Boo from the Netherlands (34.48) and Maarten Liiv from Estonia (34.78). For Marek Kania this was the first individual medal at a championship. As he admits, in this way he made one of his sporting dreams come true.

– What a weekend! – our medalist summed up his achievements.

For a few years now, Marek Kania has successfully combined studying at the Warsaw University of Technology in the field of study of robotics and automatic control (at present in the seventh semester) and his sporting career (not only in speed skating but also in roller skating). He has also taken part in the Olympic Games, won medals in world championships, championships of Europe, Poland and University championships.
