The success of WUT students

The students of the KNR Robotics Student Research Group operating at the Warsaw University of Technology Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering came out on top in this year’s International Autonomous Robot Racing Challenge running July 13 to 14, 2018 in Toronto, Canada.

It was well worth the nearly 7,000-kilometer-long journey to go as far as to Canada to show that young engineers from Poland are capable of building a best-in-class autonomous vehicle. RC scale cars, such as the Selfie car, are designed for autonomous mobility in a simulated traffic setting. Designed by the WUT KNR Team, the vehicle is equipped with a camera, a computing unit, a controller and a set of sensors such as a magnetic coding device, distance sensors and inertial motion sensors.

Testing and qualifiers took place on Friday, July 13, and the eligible cars competed in races against the time on July 14.

The first of the two competitions for Selfie to tackle its competitors was a Drag Race, or a 60-meter long sprint race of autonomous cars on a 2-meter wide track, ending with a fully autonomous stop at an obstacle. Selfie finished in a time of 8.02 seconds, ahead of all other contenders. The time achieved in the second competition, or a Circuit Race, was 4.40 seconds, which ultimately secured the Selfie team the top place.

The win in the 2018 International Autonomous Robot Racing Challenge is a huge success for Selfie’s creators, members of the KNR Student Research Group. Congratulations!

The travel to the competition was arranged under the project “Construction and Development of 1:10 Scale Autonomous Cars for Carolo-Cup and International Autonomous Robot Racing Challenge” – “The Best of the Best 2.0” funded by the European Union under the Operational Program Knowledge Education Development (POWER) of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
