Quantum vortices experience friction after all

Opublikowano: 06/02/2026 8:35 am

Images of an ultracold gas of lithium 6 atoms confined in a cylindrical optical trap. A quantum vortex pinned by a laser beam is visible in the centre. A second vortex, not held in place, can move freely; in the example shown, it orbits around the central vortex. If friction is present in the system, the radius of this orbit gradually decreases. A publication offering a new perspective on the dynamics of quantum vortices in a superfluid atomic gas has appeared in the prestigious journal Nature Communications. Researchers from the Faculty of Physics at the Warsaw University of Technology were involved in the work.

Joanna Zajda, PhD

Cancer remains one of the greatest challenges in medicine today. Each year, it causes approximately 10 million deaths worldwide. Although therapeutic options continue to expand, chemotherapy remains the foundation of treatment in many cases. One of the most commonly used drugs is cisplatin – known for over forty years. It is a potent anticancer agent, but its use is associated with numerous adverse effects and the growing problem of cancer cell resistance.

A team of researchers from the University of Warsaw continued their work in Libya. This time, in the non-invasive research of the acropolis in Ptolemais, Libya, initiated in December 2024, two researchers from the Warsaw University of Technology took part. Anna Lejzerowicz, PhD, from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at WUT investigated the geological structure of this area, while Paweł Czernic, a doctoral candidate from the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography at WUT — returning to Ptolemais for his second research campaign — conducted advanced geodetic surveys and mapping.

NanOX Recovery Box: This is what the device looks like and how it works

Organ transplantation saves the lives of many patients in Poland and around the world. Unfortunately, the number of people waiting for transplants far exceeds the number of available donors, and this gap continues to widen. Researchers associated with the Warsaw University of Technology decided to address this challenge by developing a system for the storage, transport, and monitoring of kidneys intended for transplantation.

Biodegradable implant for saving vision

Opublikowano: 23/12/2025 11:50 am

Retinal detachment is one of the most serious ophthalmic emergencies and, without prompt intervention, leads to loss of vision. For more than half a century, the standard treatment has been scleral buckling – a surgical procedure in which a silicone band is placed around the eye to indent the wall at the site of the retinal tear. Although effective, the method is associated with numerous complications, ranging from myopia to infections and the need for additional surgeries to remove the implant.
