2nd edition of the Summer School of Nuclear Energy at WUT has concluded

On August 3–7, the Institute of Heat Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) hosted the 2nd edition of the nationwide Summer School of Nuclear Energy. The event was organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, with its main theme focusing on the nuclear fuel cycle.

The official opening ceremony was conducted by Paweł Pytlarczyk, Vice President of the National Atomic Energy Agency; Paweł Gajda, PhD Eng., Director of the Department of Nuclear Energy at the Ministry of Energy; Prof. Adam Kisiel, PhD D.Sc. Eng., Rector’s Proxy for Nuclear Energy at Warsaw University of Technology; and Grzegorz Niewiński, PhD Eng., Assoc. Prof., head of the Nuclear Power Engineering specialization.

The sessions were attended by 72 students representing top Polish universities: Warsaw University of Technology, the University of Warsaw, AGH University of Krakow, as well as Silesia, Gdańsk, Wrocław, and Poznań Universities of Technology.

The core program covered the complete scope of issues related to the nuclear fuel cycle–from uranium mining and enrichment, through fuel manufacturing and utilization in nuclear reactors, to spent fuel management and its safe disposal. Lectures and workshops in English were led by experts and practitioners from France, Canada, and the United States, representing leading entities and technology vendors from those countries. An essential part of the program was a study visit to the National Radioactive Waste Repository (KSOP), where participants gained firsthand insight into the practical aspects of safe radioactive waste management including its storage and disposal procedures.

"Organized for the second time at Warsaw University of Technology in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, the Summer School of Nuclear Energy allows students to benchmark theoretical knowledge against the real-world experience of countries with highly developed nuclear energy sectors. The subject of the nuclear fuel cycle is of fundamental importance in the context of the planned construction of nuclear power plants in Poland and the training of specialists who will be responsible for their safe operation in the future," emphasizes Prof. Adam Kisiel, Rector’s Proxy for Nuclear Energy.

At the conclusion of the 2nd edition of the Summer School of Nuclear Energy, participants received personalized certificates of completion. These documents confirm active participation in specialized lectures, workshops, and classes led by an international panel of experts.

The Summer School of Nuclear Energy is a recurring event and part of Warsaw University of Technology’s ongoing effort to train highly qualified personnel to implement the Polish Nuclear Power Program. The initiative aligns with WUT’s strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Energy to develop competencies for the Polish nuclear sector.
