Architecture: new ideas for the Służewiec Racecourse by WUT students

Students of the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology, Zuzanna Bućko, Karolina Celińska and Alicja Sutkowska, proposed their own ideas for the development of Stand III at the Służewiec Horse Racecourse in Warsaw. This stand was originally intended for about seven thousand spectators with the cheapest tickets. However, it was never completed and has been left unused for many years.

The visualizations were created as part of the project called "A study of architectural form as added value in a cultural environment". The work was carried out under the supervision of Dr Grzegorz Rytel and Aleksandra Lewicka. Karolina Celińska designed a state-of-the-art gym with a mezzanine and a relaxation zone inside Stand III, Zuzanna Bućko – an indoor skatepark, and Alicja Sutkowska – a climbing hall and a viewpoint for guests.

Karolina Celińska – a state-of-the-art gym

Karolina Celińska designed a gym inside the building, which could be used by the capital’s residents and encourage their physical activity. The design includes the comprehensive reconstruction of the stand, the renovation and strengthening of the structure, adding a mezzanine, which would increase the usable space, as well as renovating the façade. The design includes a space for outdoor activities and a relaxation zone.

Zuzanna Bućko – a skatepark

The project involves adapting the stand into an indoor skatepark, which would serve the fans of skateboards, BMX bikes and rollerblades all year round. The project plans to use both the interior of the building and the stand itself. A long and roofed hall would be a space for creating ramps and tracks that would not require heating in winter. The decorative element of this space would be graffiti – a nod to the iconic wall, currently the largest street art gallery in the country, surrounding the racecourse on Puławska Street. Zuzanna Bućko's idea is to open the space to new users and attract Warsaw’s residents. At the same time, she would like to create a place for athletes to pursue physical activity.

Alicja Sutkowska – a climbing hall

Alicja Sutkowska’s design would turn Stand III into a climbing hall, using the vertical character of the building. While pursuing physical activity, the users of the climbing wall could admire a panoramic view of the surroundings – thanks to large, glazed surfaces. The building makes it possible to plan not only various climbing walls, but also auxiliary spaces. Inside the stand, Alicja also planned a gym and catering outlets, which would attract Warsaw’s residents, but also jockeys who train on the track on a daily basis.

All the ideas of the Warsaw University of Technology students involve creating a new meeting place in the previously unused stand, integrating Warsaw’s residents and encouraging social interaction and physical activity.
