Faculty of Civil Engineering students win The BIM Challenge
Members of the Digital Construction Student Research Group - Karolina Drabik, Jakub Sitnik, Do Trong Hinh and Filip Ćwik - together with the group’s supervisor, Kostiantyn Protchenko, PhD, took part in The BIM Challenge conference in Constanța, Romania. They returned with valuable experience and awards from the design competition.
Over five days, the competition participants worked on a joint project in interdisciplinary teams of ten. Students from the WUT Faculty of Civil Engineering were responsible for the structural design. Each team was assigned a mentor - an expert from a company in the architecture, engineering, construction and operations (AEC/O) sector who was responsible for developing and implementing BIM technologies within their organisation. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a built asset.
In addition to working on the competition project using the latest digital tools, participants attended lectures on BIM. Kostiantyn Protchenko, PhD, delivered a lecture entitled ‘BIM Workflows for Prefabricated and Cast-in-Place Concrete Structures’.
Our students performed exceptionally well in the competition. The first place went to a team mentored by a BIM manager from STRABAG and including Filip Ćwik. Its project combined the design of a hybrid structure based on prefabrication with Lean Construction principles and precise task scheduling. Second place was awarded to a team mentored by Concrete & Design Solutions (CDS) and including Jakub Sitnik. Its design took seismic actions into account. The team also received a distinction for the best structural solutions. The People’s Choice Award and Best Presentation Award went to the team of Karolina Drabik - President of the Digital Construction Student Research Group, who was selected as the competition team leader - working under the guidance of Asociația Națională a Zincatorilor (ANAZ). The team designed a student centre concept that combined cultural motifs with hot-dip galvanised steel resistant to a marine environment (corrosivity category C5).
“Taking part in The BIM Challenge gave members of the Digital Construction Student Research Group a valuable opportunity to gain experience in an international, interdisciplinary environment. Their successes confirm the high level of knowledge and skills demonstrated by students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology,” emphasised Kostiantyn Protchenko, PhD.
The BIM Challenge conference was held from 24 to 30 August 2026. The event was organised by Allbim SRL, with the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology serving as one of its academic partners.
