From the diary of the WUT Racing team
This year, students from the WUT Racing team participated in three Formula Student competitions: in Hungary (July 28–August 3), Croatia (August 20–25), and Poland (August 27–September 2). How did it go for them? Let's hear from the team.
By way of introduction: The Formula Student competitions were an extremely valuable experience for us. As a highly active team, we had the opportunity to verify the results of months of work, both in the design phase in front of the computer and in the workshop during the execution phase. The successes we achieved motivate us to continue our efforts, and the time spent together fosters a pleasant atmosphere that promotes fruitful collaboration.
Hungary
We kicked off the season with the FS East competition. Beginnings are always challenging, especially when it comes to the first technical inspection of the year. After passing it, we proceeded with the noise test and the tilt test. The first problems arose during the brake test when the clutch cable broke. Thanks to the quick reaction of the team members, we were able to retake this part of the inspection later the same day. Unfortunately, due to a lack of time, we couldn’t participate in the Acceleration and Skidpad events. However, the car was ready to compete in the Autocross and Endurance events. Thanks to its reliability, we finished the competition in 2nd place in Endurance, the long-distance race and the crown event of Formula Student.
Our results in Formula Student East 2024:
- 10th place in BPP (Business Plan Presentation)
- 6th place in C&M (Cost and Manufacturing)
- 7th place in ED (Engineering Design)
- 5th place in Autocross
- 2nd place in Endurance
- No result in ACC (Acceleration) and Skidpad
Croatia
The next challenge was FS Alpe Adria – the competition with the best atmosphere we've ever participated in. Although the car competed in all the events, we once again had to deal with breakdowns. A loose suspension insert forced us to weld a steel replacement. Despite the change of plans and less time spent in the practice area, we competed in the qualifying Autocross event and also participated in the Endurance race. Unfortunately, despite very good pace, we couldn’t finish the event due to an electrical harness failure. There was nothing more we could do at that point, but we used the time to locate the problem and fix the issue. We performed well in the static events, gaining valuable feedback and solid points.
Our results in Formula Student Alpe Adria 2024:
- 12th place in BPP (Business Plan Presentation)
- 9th place in C&M (Cost and Manufacturing)
- 6th place in ED (Engineering Design)
- 7th place in ACC (Acceleration)
- 10th place in Skidpad
- 12th place in Autocross
- No result in Endurance and Efficiency
Poland
The final challenge for us was the domestic FS Poland competition. A demanding group of judges took quite some time to verify that our car complied with the regulations. After passing the technical inspection, we participated in the ACC event, where we achieved a high 3rd place, and in the Skidpad event, where we finished in 5th place. A fuel tank and clutch failure eliminated us from Autocross. However, the persistence, ambition, and dedication of the team led to the engine being removed, the clutch repaired, and the car made ready for the race in just a few hours. This allowed us to participate in the Endurance event. Despite a car failure during the long-distance race, we were proud of the work we had done.
Our results in Formula Student Poland 2024:
- 4th place in BPP (Business Plan Presentation)
- 5th place in C&M (Cost and Manufacturing)
- 5th place in ED (Engineering Design)
- 3rd place in ACC (Acceleration)
- 5th place in Skidpad
- No result in Autocross, Endurance, and Efficiency
Summary
All the competitions of the 2024 season provided valuable experience and insights, which we will certainly use in future projects. The mentality, commitment, and fight to the end strengthened the team's relationships, while the successes boosted our motivation to work even harder and aim for even better results.
