Joint teaching program of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Microsoft

“Introduction to applications and solutions based on Artificial Intelligence and Microsoft Azure” and “Applications and solutions based on Artificial Intelligence on Microsoft Azure” are new subjects for applied computer science students in the first and second cycle degree studies.

The classes have been introduced as a result of the Future Ready program implemented by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology in cooperation with Microsoft and such partners as EY, Lingaro, Semantive, PKO PB and 3Soft.

Preparation for work

Thanks to them, students are to learn, already at the stage of their education, how to take advantage of the possibilities created by technologies which affect almost every aspect of life to a greater and greater extent.

As Włodzimierz Dąbrowski, PhD Eng., an associate professor at the WUT and the Dean’s Proxy for Studies at the WUT Faculty of Electrical Engineering, explains: “The new subjects are addressed at students of applied computer science. Although we are quite familiar with technologies, we are aware that we are entering a new stage. However, from the very beginning, we have one goal, i.e. to prepare our students so that in their professional life they can discover and achieve goals they are interested in. So that they can climb the career ladder believing that they have been educated to meet the challenges of their times, and so that they can now apply at work the knowledge gained at university.”

The Future Ready program, as part of which the new subjects are offered, is designed to reach those students who work or want to work in digital jobs based on cutting-edge technologies. Microsoft wants to train 150,000 people and provide support and solutions that will make it possible to create the Polish Digital Valley.

Ready for challenges

As Estera Kot, MSc Eng., a PhD student at the WUT Faculty of Electrical Engineering, explains: “For years, there has been a belief prevailing among students, but also a prevalent social belief in general, that real experience is gained only at work. I’d like to reverse it. I am a PhD student at the Warsaw University of Technology. I graduated from my engineering and master’s studies here and I know that the most important things are the will and consistency in pursuing the goal from the very first day at university. The earlier we start learning about such solutions as the new technologies, the easier it will be later for us to use them in our professional life. After all, it’s not about always being prepared for the challenges and surprises that the world brings with it. It’s about being able to anticipate them and respond to them when they do arise.”

New subjects as part of the applied computer science classes at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering started on 1 October 2020. The classes are co-conducted by experts from companies that are the program technology partners, which also define project and research topics for the course participants. Students work in teams of several members and the most committed students can participate in an internship program, which is designed to further develop and broaden their knowledge of cloud technology and artificial intelligence.

The project coordinators at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology include: Estera Kot, MSc Eng., a PhD student at the WUT Faculty of Electrical Engineering, and Włodzimierz Dąbrowski, PhD Eng., an associate professor at the WUT and the Dean’s Proxy for Studies at the WUT Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
