KEK representatives visit NCBJ and WUT
Representatives of Japan’s High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) visited the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) in Świerk and the Warsaw University of Technology. During their visit, they learned about the progress of work on equipment for the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment and plans for its production.
The Japanese delegation included Prof. Shoji Asai, Director General of the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK); Prof. Takashi Kobayashi, Director of the J-PARC Center and KEK-side Project Leader of Hyper-Kamiokande; and Prof. Takeshi Nakadaira, Deputy Project Leader of Hyper-Kamiokande on the KEK side and Head of the Neutrino Group at KEK’s Institute of Particle and Nuclear Studies.
The visit began at NCBJ in Świerk with a meeting and presentation on the institute’s activities. NCBJ was represented by Prof. Agnieszka Pollo, Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs; Prof. Ewa Rondio, Leader of the Polish Hyper-Kamiokande Consortium and Poland’s representative in the Hyper-Kamiokande project; Prof. Sławomir Wronka, Head of the Department of Particle Accelerator Physics and Technology; and Dr Justyna Łagoda, Head of the Department of High Energy Physics. The Warsaw University of Technology was represented by Rector Prof. Krzysztof Zaremba, Dr Marcin Ziembicki, and Dr Andrzej Rychter.
The guests then toured NCBJ laboratories, where the LINAC linear accelerator is being developed for the calibration of the Hyper-Kamiokande detector. During the accelerator presentation, Jan Klimaszewski, MSc, joined the meeting.
The next stop was the Department of Nuclear and Medical Electronics at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology of the Warsaw University of Technology. The Japanese delegation was shown the laboratory where multi-PMT detector modules were designed and where preparations are currently underway for their production. The modules are intended for the Intermediate Water Cherenkov Detector (IWCD) in Tokai, Japan, as well as for the far detector of Hyper-Kamiokande in Kamioka.
Dr Andrzej Rychter and Dr Marcin Ziembicki provided a detailed presentation of the modules’ design and operation, as well as production plans for the coming period. The visit also included a presentation of electronic modules designed and tested in Poland, which will be used in the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment.
Other representatives of Warsaw University of Technology taking part in the meeting included Prof. Janusz Marzec, Dr Robert Kurjata, and PhD students - Bartosz Piotrowski, MSc, and Krzysztof Dygnarowicz, MSc.
Following the presentation of the laboratories and multi-PMT modules, the guests visited the Main Building of the Warsaw University of Technology. In a friendly atmosphere, the participants discussed the upcoming 200th anniversary of the Warsaw University of Technology and the similarities between WUT and the University of Tokyo.
