Prof. dr hab. inż. arch. Jan Słyk, Vice-Rector for Studies, and Prof. dr hab. inż. Andrzej Garbacz, Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering were named the Industry’s Personality of the Year 2020 in Builder Awards.

Prof. dr hab. inż. arch. Jan Słyk is an architect, academic teacher and researcher of architecture who explores the intersection of engineering and information technology. He aims to explain and verify in practice new methods of communication which support creativity amid the transformation of living conditions and a shift into the era of digital media.

He combines professional, scientific and teaching experience and deploys learning by designing methods in his teaching practice with students, including in a cross-disciplinary context.

After graduation from the Warsaw University of Technology Faculty of Architecture, he focused on creative work. He joined his alma mater’s faculty as an author of implemented architectural designs and co-author or award-winning projects recognized in architectural design competitions. Having been awarded a doctoral degree, and then, in 2013, a post-doctoral degree, he continued to pursue his scientific interests and served as the Head of Section, Vice-Rector for Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture. In 2020, he became a professor after he had published a monograph Modele Architektoniczne (Architectural Models), which was honored by the Minister of Construction. Currently, he is the Vice-Rector for Studies.

Prof. dr hab. inż. Andrzej Garbacz is a graduate from the Warsaw University of Technology Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering. He has worked at the Faculty of Civil Engineering since 1991, currently serving as its professor. In 2012–2016, he was the Head of the Institute of Construction Engineering.

He teaches courses in Building Materials Engineering; Polymer Composite Technology; Assessment of Materials Condition in Structures; and Repair of Concrete Structures and has supervised over 50 diploma theses.

His area of scientific interest is the analysis of relations between the microstructure of concrete-like polymer composites and their characteristics using various methods of quantitative description of materials microstructure and non-destructive testing methods for materials properties testing. He also explores applications of polymer-cement composites and polymer composites as materials for repairs and surface treatment of concrete structures, including doing research to evaluate their suitability for construction.

Builder Awards are honors presented by the Builder monthly to recognize accomplishments and appreciate the market position of the winners. This year, the awards were presented for the eighteenth time.
