Grigorii Chernyshov completes an internship
Grigorii is gaining experience through tasks involving the infrastructure of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). During his internship, he draws on his knowledge of civil engineering and digital design technologies.
Our student works on designs in a Building Information Modelling (BIM) environment and supports the supervision of repairs to the power supply system for the superconducting magnets. His responsibilities also include organising construction work, procuring equipment and materials, and addressing occupational health and safety matters.
Grigorii’s internship coincides with a particularly important period at CERN. Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) is under way: an extensive programme of work to upgrade the Large Hadron Collider and prepare it for its next phase of operation.
Spatial coordination and logistics are among the greatest challenges of the day-to-day work. The infrastructure on which Grigorii works is located deep underground, and the confined space in the tunnels requires the transport and installation of large, complex components to be planned with precision.
"My task is to carry out spatial analyses and use models to work out how complex, enormous components can be transported and installed safely in the extremely confined space of the tunnels. We have to plan everything so that the components will fit along the entire route to their destination and then slot perfectly into place," says Grigorii Chernyshov.
The internship also offers an opportunity to work in an international, interdisciplinary team. Grigorii works with specialists from countries including Switzerland, France, Italy and South Africa. This allows him to learn about different working methods, safety standards and solutions used in complex engineering projects.
