Results of the Competition for the Prof. Jan Czochralski Award
Results of the 7th edition of the Competition for the Prof. Jan Czochralski Award are now known. The laureates are representatives of Silesian University of Technology, Poznan University of Technology, and the Aleksander Krupkowski Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The competition recognizes the best diploma and doctoral theses, as well as outstanding scientific and/or applied achievements related to the fields of scientific and technical activity represented by the competition’s patron.
- The laureate of the award for the best diploma thesis is Sebastian Kanik, MSc, from Silesian University of Technology for his engineering thesis entitled “Surface Modification of Titanium Implants Using Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation and Oxygen Plasma Oxidation”.
- The laureate of the award for the best doctoral thesis is Marta Izabela Przychodnia, PhD, from Poznan University of Technology for her doctoral thesis entitled “Fabrication and Characterization of Two-Dimensional Surface Alloys of Rare Earth Metals on Pt(111)”.
- The laureate of the award for outstanding scientific and/or applied achievements is Maciej Szczerba, PhD, from the Aleksander Krupkowski Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences for his work entitled “Reverse and Pseudo-Reverse Twinning in RSC Metallic Materials: From Single Crystals to Structural Materials”.
In the 7th edition of the Competition for the Prof. Jan Czochralski Award, 2 applications were submitted for the award for the best diploma thesis, 9 applications for the award for the best doctoral thesis, and 4 applications for the award for outstanding scientific and/or applied achievements.
Jan Czochralski was an outstanding chemist and metallurgist, as well as a professor at the Warsaw University of Technology. His greatest achievement remains the discovery of a method for producing single crystals, which played a key role in the development of modern electronics.
Works related to the Professor’s scientific achievements may be submitted to the competition bearing his name, in particular those concerning crystallization and recrystallization processes, the production, study of the structure and properties, and application of single crystals, the production and properties of alloys for sliding bearings, the study of the structure of metals and alloys, elastic and/or plastic deformation of metals and alloys, corrosion studies coupled with strength testing, and lightweight metal alloys, their structure, properties, and applications.
