A Student from the Faculty of Architecture of the WUT honored in the MICROHOME 2020 competition
The international jury appreciated Zuzanna Słabik’s design of a modular structure in the spirit of sustainable architecture – Modular Housing Unit.
In the competition organized by the Bee Breeders platform, the participants were asked to design a modular structure with an area of no more than 25 m² which would accommodate a young professional couple.
Our student presented the concept of a foldable micro house for people who work remotely but do not have enough capital to buy a traditional house or apartment.
“The main idea was to create a building that would function like a piece of IKEA furniture. A foldable modular home, which can be ordered via a website, opens up a choice of various arrangement options. Thanks to the well-thought-out dimensions of the elements, it can be assembled by two people with the use of basic tools”, Zuzanna Słabik describes the project. The author also points out that the idea is a good solution in a time of pandemic. “We rent a house for several months while we work remotely, and then we hand it over for disinfection so that it can be rented to other users.” The cost of building such a house is approximately €7,000.
The entire project is based on a grate structure. It provides stability, but also allows the use of interesting spatial solutions with plenty of storage room located in the thickness of the wall and floor. The material used for the house are the carbon-negative and high-performance ECOBoards. The ecological nature of the project is also enhanced by the use of solar panels, electric batteries and a rainwater collection and filtering system.
“When working on projects, I like to focus on the users and their needs, as was the case, for instance, in my engineering project titled “Intergenerational Education Center with a Retirement Home”, which I developed in consultation with dr inż. arch. Agnieszka Cieśla. My project supervisor was mgr inż. arch. Sławomir Kowal who remained my mentor and supported me also during the Microhome project development, for which I am very grateful to him”, emphasized Zuzanna Słabik who will soon graduate from the Faculty of Architecture of the WUT.
