Artur Werys, student of the WUT Faculty of Physics, is spending his holidays in an unusual way – he’s working on a prototype of the FoCal-H detector, which will be part of the ALICE experiment. Arthur’s stay is taking place thanks to the CERN programme SPARC (Student Engineering Internships) 2025. Its participants complete internships under the supervision of experts and develop solutions that then support CERN’s research equipment.

Our student mainly concentrates on prototyping and designing in Autodesk Inventor, and then prints the designed elements on 3D printers, both filament and resin based.

– The most important area I deal with is the optical fibre system of the detector. I designed, among other things, sleeves in which optical fibres are bundled in groups of 16. To ensure their stability, I developed a gluing procedure using epoxy resin. This is a key element for the proper functioning of the detector – says Artur Werys from the WUT Faculty of Physics.

In his work, he also developed various useful practical tools, such as a “curing oven” for drying components after resin printing, as well as a frame for gluing and arranging optical fibres in the detector absorber.

– What I like most about the internship is the design process itself, full of repetitions, creativity and perceptiveness. I start from a hand drawing with a pencil on a piece of paper, then I transfer the idea to Inventor, print a test version to check the operation and only then is the model ready – explains our student.

The summer at CERN also had a different, less engineering aspect. The area is good for relaxing – in nearby towns, cosy villages, during hikes in the mountains. There the participants of the summer SPARC programme bond and find the needed balance.

 – I wish to thank everyone who made my participation in this programme possible, especially Bartłomiej Klus, who supported me in the application process, and Maciej Czarnynoga and Krystian Rosłon for their daily help and patience. Thanks to the internship I can expand my horizons, both in scientific and personal terms – adds Artur Werys.
