Award for a publication on passive radars
The team from the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology has received the Editor's Choice Article for the article "Experimental Seaborne Passive Radar". The researchers described therein the results of their technology research carried out during NATO exercises in the Baltic Sea.
The authors of the award-winning publication are Gustaw Mazurek, PhD, Prof. Krzysztof Kulpa, Mateusz Malanowski, PhD, Assistant Professor at WUT, and Aleksander Droszcz, MSc.
The capabilities of passive radars developed by our researchers were tested in the autumn of 2019 as part of the NATO exercises: APART-GAS (Active Passive Radar Trials – Ground-based, Airborne, Seaborne). 70 people from 9 NATO countries and Switzerland took part in them.
The radar was then installed on a ship sailing on the Baltic Sea.
– While the technology of stationary passive radars is already quite well mastered, radars on mobile platforms are still a novelty – emphasizes Prof. Mateusz Malanowski. – This is one of the reasons why the results presented in the article were appreciated.
During the exercises, the radar successfully detected aircrafts such as e.g.F-16, Casa-295, experimental rockets of the Polish company Space Forest and naval ships.
Among the advantages of the solution we should mention the undetectability (the device does not emit electromagnetic waves that could reveal its location), no need to allocate the bandwidth to radio emission, and the construction of the system – simpler and cheaper than in active radars.
