Joining forces to take on an international competition

The WUT Bridge Engineering Student Research Group, together with the Young Construction Managers Student Research Group from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, are setting out to win an international competition. The event in question is the “Hall of The Year” contest, held annually at the Czech Technical University in Prague.

The task for participants is to design and build a wooden girder with a span of 1.3 metres. They must then transport it to the Czech Republic and subject it to a load test on the day of the competition. The winner will be the team whose structure achieves the best load‑to‑weight ratio.

“As part of our preparations, we have already carried out laboratory tests on pine wood and the adhesives we plan to use. We are currently in the process of gluing trial models,” said Piotr Ambrochowicz, the team’s designer.

Thanks to contacts gained during other competitions, students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering joined forces with the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and its Young Construction Managers Student Research Group, seven of whose members will form part of the fifteen‑strong competition team.

It is also worth highlighting the international character of this collaboration. The combined team includes international students who are currently in Poland as part of the Erasmus+ programme.

“Our ambitions reach the podium, yet the heart of this project is something more. It is an inter‑university collaboration. By combining the strengths of Warsaw and Wrocław, we already feel like winners, and we show that in the world of modern construction it is cooperation and the exchange of knowledge that form the most demanding and, at the same time, the most valuable challenge,” said Łukasz Kruk, project coordinator.
