Mateusz Krzyziński is a graduate of the first-cycle programme in the field of study of Data Science at the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science and now he is a student of an interdisciplinary programme with the leading field of study of Data Science at the same faculty.

Since July 2021, he has been member of a research team MI2.AI, led by Prof. Przemysław Biecek. He studies explainable artificial intelligence and interpretable machine learning, in particular, survival analysis.

Mateusz Krzyziński has co-authored 4 publications in reviewed journals for a total number of 550 points. One of the articles was published in a renowned journal ”Knowledge-Based Systems” (number of points: 200). It talks about the process of survival analysis, connected to modelling the time elapsing until the occurrence of a specific event, e.g. death of a patient. The method SurvSHAP(t) may be used in medicine – to determine long-term prospects for patients with uveal melanoma. This potential was confirmed by studies in a research team comprising technical and medical universities. The algorithm may also be used to predict time left until a critical condition of technical installation in case of accumulating damage (degradation).

The PW student has not only published papers but he has also spoken at conferences, e.g., at a workshop at the NeurIPS conference. He co-authors open source packages survex and dalex. He has won the scholarship of the Minister of Education and Science for the academic year 2022/2023 and the grant of the Warsaw University of Technology Foundation.

– I knew that finalists had numerous and varied achievements and when I heard in the foreword that we are talented engineers, I basically had the impression that I am the least of an engineer, since exact sciences in my case cover mainly IT – said Mateusz Krzyziński right after receiving the Student Nobel.

– Surely, it is for me a great distinction – he added. – I would like to thank my parents and my family for showing so much patience. Sitting at the computer has paid off. I also wish to thank my friends and my research team MI2.AI, especially Hubert Baniecki – my friend who encouraged me to take part in the competition.

This year the Student Nobel was awarded for the fourteenth time. Awards were given in ten categories: Technical sciences, Arts, Journalism and literature, Natural sciences and power engineering, Physics and astronomy, Medicine and pharmacy, Social sciences, Economic sciences, Social activity and 3W. The competition is organized by NZS Independent Students’ Association.
