Our doctoral students will design a district in one of Czech cities

Piotr Person, Olga Czeranowska-Panufnik, Władysława Kijewska and Aleksander Sojka from the Doctoral School No. 5 of the Warsaw University of Technology have won an architectural and urban planning competition for the development of post-industrial areas in the Czech city of Nachod. The new district is to become a showcase of Czech urban planning.
The goal of the competition was to design a part of the city, vibrant and appreciated by the inhabitants, adjacent to the historic center and the castle. The district is to be built on the site of the old Tepna textile factory. The announcement of the competition was preceded by negotiations with experts, the public and potential investors. The local authorities want the three-hectare area around the castle to become a showcase of a city with a population of 20,000, located on the border with Poland.
26 teams (about 160 architects and town planners in total) entered the competition, from among which the jury selected five, which were given the opportunity to supplement their proposals and win one of the awards. The jury assessed the proposals anonymously, which means that it was not known at all times who their authors were. The judges deemed the proposal of the team of doctoral students from the Warsaw University of Technology to be the best.

According to the authors, the proposal focuses mainly on the adaptability to climate change and social cohesion:
The main idea behind this proposal is to create a comfortable, inclusive and renewable environment that fits the existing urban and cultural context.
The jury chaired by architect Jaroslav Wertig from the Prague studio A69 - Architects emphasized some of the features of the winning project:
It deserves the first place in all respects, because its authors best understood the relations with the environment, and introduced them to the proposed solutions. The assumption of two axes, which start from the planned square near Tepna, logically and clearly divide the area into urban quarters. The design is simple and clear, largely taking into account the existing buildings and the condition of the property on the site. Individual elements of the assumption can be gradually supplemented over time, it is not necessary to build them at once as a whole.
By the end of the year, the winning team is to prepare detailed spatial concepts and architectural designs for the buildings, the functions of which will then be determined by the city authorities. The project provides for the construction of residential, administrative, commercial and service buildings as well as a kindergarten or a community center. There are also plans for a fire station and an ambulance station. Small production plants may be built around. The architects emphasized that there will be a lot of greenery and water features in the district.
