Our students have created a platform to help young adults become independent
This year’s virtual Christmas event organized by the One Day foundation saw the launch of the Usamodzielnieni app. It is a tool developed by a WUT team to support young adults leaving educational care facilities and starting an independent life as adults.
Our University’s collaboration with the One Day Foundation dates back to 2017. It was then that the Grand Hall of the WUT Main Building hosted the first Christmas party for children from children’s homes and educational care facilities across Poland. Two years later, a decision was taken to extend the scope of the partnership and to establish a team which would use their engineering skills to support young people starting their own independent life as adults.
The challenge of establishing the project team was taken up by Łukasz Żmudzin, a WUT Ph.D. student and employee of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. As part of the project course coordinated by prof. nadzw. dr. hab. Andrzej Dzieliński, the students designed and created a web app with a series of key functionalities and panels, including:
- CV wizard,
- search tool for job ads prepared for young adults who wish to become independent,
- section offering consultations with experts, including a psychologist, lawyer and accountant,
- call forwarding to a help line,
- a repository of motivational videos recorded by celebrities working with the Foundation.
The work took several months to complete. The backbone of the project was first showcased during last year’s Christmas event organized by One Day. Since then, the team has been working hard to translate its ideas into a user-friendly and functional virtual platform.
“At university, we have plenty of opportunities to prove our worth as software developers, but project management is a new challenge, so I am delighted that such a project has been implemented,” says Monika Osiak, who was the intermediary between the development team and the Foundation. She adds that working on the app was an opportunity to learn about new technologies and also to put management methodology theory into practice.
The results of our students’ work have been made available to the beneficiaries of the Foundation. For more information, visit: www.usamodzielnieni.pl.
