The European Graphene Flagship
WUT as the only one Poland-based university in the organization
Represented by its Faculty of Physics, the Warsaw University of Technology is the only Poland-based university to join the Graphene Flagship, one of the EU’s flagship projects under the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) program.
The consortium is made up of 158 partners across 23 European countries. The intended duration spans the years 2014 to 2023. The purpose of the project is to put top-class research to efficient use in materials innovation based on graphene and related materials (GRM). Four years into the Graphene Flagship, the efficient collaboration between European research centres has already taken technologies from the realm of laboratories to the real world of applications. With its large scale and the 10-year time span and budget, the project enables interdisciplinary collaboration between 158 academic and industrial partners from all over Europe. The Flagship’s mission is effective commercialization of GRM research and creation of an attractive GRM product offering for the consumer market by European businesses. Partnering with the Graphene Flagship are organizations form the US, Japan, Korea and China.
Graphene became a big thing in the scientific circles all over the world in 2010 when Prof. Andre Geim and Prof. Konstantin Novoselov of the University of Manchester won the Noble Prize for breakthrough research into this two-dimensional carbon. The incredible properties of graphene and other two-dimensional materials make them well positioned to become the material of the future and stir a revolution across industry sectors. Advanced application research focuses on functional composite coatings; structural and construction materials; quick charging batteries; supercapacitors; electronic components of 5G and 6G wireless communications systems; high-frequency electronics; cheap printed electronics; flexible electronic; photodetectors, sensors and biosensors; spectrometers; biomedical devices; neural connections; medical therapies, etc.
In September 2018, the Warsaw University of Technology joined the consortium; the University, through its Faculty of Physics, has a several years’ history of performing research into graphene and other layered materials to explore new manufacturing technologies, characterization and applications in electronics and other fields of technology. The Warsaw University of Technology is the only university in Poland to be part of the Graphene Flagship consortium. Under the project, the University will carry out research into crystallization, characterization and applications of graphene and other two-dimensional materials. The key tasks of the consortium include two-dimensional semi-conductor compound technologies, a creation of instrumented structures and research into physical phenomena accompanying GRM applications. The research team is directed by WUT D.Sc., Eng. Mariusz Zdrojek and PhD, Eng. Włodzimierz Strupiński.
