Bartłomiej Łuszczuk from the Faculty of Chemistry at the Warsaw University of Technology was the only student from Poland to be awarded a scholarship in the Amgen Scholars Programme. It is a global summer research internship programme for students that provides hands-on research experience in the fields of biology, biotechnology, and biomedical sciences at leading scientific institutions - with only 2% of applicants being accepted.

The award enabled Bartek to complete a two-month internship at ETH Zürich and to present the results of his research during a final symposium at the University of Cambridge.

How does Bartek recall this time?

In the laboratory…

My first international internship in Switzerland has just come to an end. At the Biomaterials Engineering Laboratory, I was able to work on developing microsystems that replicate the complex physiology of bone outside the body. I worked on a device that simulates how bone cells sense pressure and form three-dimensional connections. This experience allowed me not only to gain new knowledge and technical skills but also to understand how important patience and precision are in scientific work.

… and in the Alps

What truly made this time special, however, were the people I met there. The programme brought together a wonderful group of young, ambitious students from across Europe. Thanks to additional support from ETH, we also received a two-month Swiss railway pass – so during the week we were conquering scientific peaks, and on weekends, Alpine summits. To me, this is the best example of "scientific tourism" I've ever experienced.

The people who make science

The programme also gave me the opportunity to present my work at a poster session for the first time. Although I initially found the experience in Cambridge stressful, it turned out to be extremely enriching and rewarding.

These two months taught me that the true value of science lies not only in equipment and experiments but also in the people with whom we can share passion and ambition. Unforgettable moments in the laboratory, on Alpine trails, and among wonderful friends from all over Europe make me look back on this experience with joy as one of the most important stages of my education.
