ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) is an international ranking of universities’ performance in particular academic disciplines. The 54 academic subjects included in the ranking list were grouped into five areas: natural, medical, social and life sciences, as well as engineering. A total of 4,000 universities from all over the world have been included in the ranking. With the top spots in 31 disciplines, American universities are the undisputed winner of the ranking.
The ranking list is based on five criteria: the number of papers published; citation impact measured with the Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI) index; international cooperation with reference to publications; number of papers in leading scientific journals; and the number of significant scientific awards.
The GRAS is a subject ranking put together by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which is also behind the ShanghaiRanking’s ARWU. The ARWU is one of the four major university rankings, the other being QS, Times Higher Education and U-Multirank.
