A drug management system developed by students of Warsaw University of Technology won the e-Health Hackathon programming marathon.

The event was attended by 15 teams, consisting of students at the IT and medical faculties as well as representatives of start-ups. Over the course of two days, they had to deal with a challenge related to cardiology. Their task was to develop a solution that would help patients, doctors and the entire health care system. The jury evaluated categories including: innovation, content-related value, commercialisation potential, competitiveness, quality, and the usefulness of the projects.

Jakub Sobolewski, Mateusz Szczęsny, Oliwia Makowiecka and Igor Anczykowski – the team from WUT’s Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology took first place. The Health Improvers team developed a drug management system that makes it possible to check if there are any adverse interactions between drugs taken by a patient. The app will also allow doctors to monitor whether patients are taking their prescribed medication.

“This solution also allows you to obtain information from patients about the effectiveness of therapy, any side effects, and whether the drug works as intended. Ultimately, such data could be analysed by the Ministry of Health and the National Health Fund in terms of the quality of treatment and allocation of funds, and also by pharmaceutical companies to help then obtain knowledge about whether a therapy is effective,” explains Jakub Sobolewski.

The tool would also help pharmacists. Before dispensing a drug to a patient, they could check whether or not it interferes with the patient’s other medication. Notably, the application can also be used outside the field of cardiology.

“We hope that we will be able to develop the project, seeing as we had the opportunity to meet representatives of business and public administration during the event,” adds Jakub Sobolewski.

The e-Health Hackathon was launched on the initiative of the Warsaw Health Innovation Hub, the companies Janssen Polska and Roche Polska, and the Federation of Polish Entrepreneurs.
