A team of scientists from the Warsaw University of Technology has developed an innovative method of automatic classification of urban development density with the use of microwave SAR satellite images (Synthetic Aperture Radar). Joanna Pluto-Kossakowska, PhD, from the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography, in collaboration with Sandhim Wangiyana from the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology, has developed a methodology that can support the monitoring and planning of urban fabric.

Daria Pałgan, MSc, received the Best Paper Award at the sixth Nano-Joining & Micro-Joining International Conference, which took place between November 17 and November 21, 2025, in Yeongju, Korea. Daria’s presentation was titled: “Cu-Mo nanocomposites as an interlayer for joining in thermal management systems”.

A team of students from Varsovian universities was the runner-up in the prestigious iGEM Competition – the world’s biggest synthetic biology competition organised by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). One of the members of the team is Bartłomiej Łuszczuk, a student of biotechnology at the Faculty of Chemistry at the Warsaw University of Technology.

Once again, the Warsaw University of Technology has been ranked among the best scientific institutions listed in the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025. The ranking includes 57 subjects (with Artificial Intelligence and Robotic Science & Engineering added compared to the previous year), grouped into five main fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.

In the era of growing environmental challenges and the need for energetic transformation, scientists at the Warsaw University of Technology are taking part in one of the most innovative research projects in Europe – TITAN (Direct biogas conversion to green H₂ and carbon-based materials for soil enhancement and SiC production using a scalable microwave catalytic reactor). The initiative aims to develop a technology that facilitates direct biogas conversion to green H₂ and precious carbon-based materials in a new generation catalytic reactor.

This year’s edition of Carbon Korea was exceptional for the Polish materials field. For the first time, thanks to the cooperation between the Polish Composite Technology Cluster and the Korean K-Carbon cluster, a Polish stand was created, presenting the potential of companies, research institutes, and scientific units from Poland.

A researcher from the WUT Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering was distinguished at the 9th International Conference on Nanomaterials by Severe Plastic Deformation (October 31–November 4, 2025, Beijing), one of the largest events dedicated to techniques of severe plastic deformation.

Patrycja Wińska, PhD, from the Team for Biomedical Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry, will implement the project “Human exosomes as natural carriers for inhibitors and degraders of CK2 protein kinase in targeted anti-cancer therapy”. She was granted funding for the project as part of the OPUS 28+LAP/Weave Competition of the National Science Centre.

This year, WUT scientists have continued the non-invasive research programme conducted by the Warsaw University of Technology at the site of the former Treblinka II extermination camp. This year’s work aimed to carry out a detailed survey of the internal roads of the camp, with particular emphasis on the route leading to the gas chambers.

Katarzyna Matys-Popielska, MSc, and Krzysztof Popielski, MSc, are taking part in the cotutelle PhD programme, which allows to prepare one doctoral dissertation under the supervision of an adviser from the Warsaw University of Technology and an auxiliary supervisor from a foreign partner institution, leading to the award of the doctoral degree at both units. We now know the winners of this year’s global James Dyson Award. In the “Sustainability” category, the undisputed winner was WaterSense – a groundbreaking project aimed at developing and bringing to market an innovative system for monitoring water quality in Poland. The winners were personally selected by Sir James Dyson, and each of the two global winners will receive £30,000 for their invention.

Students of the Warsaw University of Technology received nearly PLN 1.3 million in the second call for the programme of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education “Support for Students in Developing Their Competences and Skills”. As a result, WUT took the second place in Poland in terms of total funding and third place in terms of the number of projects.

Tomasz Olczak, student of the WUT Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology, was appointed as student expert of the Polish Accreditation Committee. Student experts, as members of the evaluation committees, participate in inspections of fields of study all over Poland, and after the inspections, they contribute to reports that are the basis of programme evaluation decisions.

The Combains team comprising Natalia Choszczyk, Mikołaj Rowicki and Filip Langiewicz has secured the title of an international winner in a global hackathon Bit n Build. All team members study at the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science in the field of study Data Science. The competition task was to develop two projects that use AI.

Professor Mariusz Malinowski, WUT Vice-Rector for Research, was elected in general elections as member of the IEEE Board of Directors. IEEE is an association of technical specialists with 500,000 members in 167 countries. Professor Malinowski will represent Chapter 6 and his term of office will be two years.

The laureates of this year’s Foundation of Polish Science Prize include Professor Wojciech Knap from the CENTERA Laboratory at the Warsaw University of Technology CEZAMAT. Professor Knap was awarded the prize in the area of mathematical, physical and engineering sciences. The FNP prize is regarded as the most important scientific distinction in Poland. It is the 34th edition of the awards.

At the beginning of 2025, the Student Research Group for Aerial Measurement and Control Systems was established at the Warsaw University of Technology. It operates at the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering, under the academic supervision of Elżbieta Jarzębowska, PhD. Despite its short period of activity, the Group has already proven its ability to carry out ambitious research and engineering projects. Their work doesn't end in laboratories – it is tested in real, often extreme conditions.

Defining quality indicators for point clouds, simulating the operation of terrestrial laser scanners (TLS), and developing shared digital metrological tools – these are the main goals of the ScanClouDT project. The initiative brings together 15 institutions from across Europe, including our University.

Our young, talented researchers were unmatched in the national final of FameLab 2025! Natalia Izdebska took first place, and Bartłomiej Łuszczuk secured the second spot on the podium. Natalia will represent Poland in the FameLab International Final on 25 November at CERN in Geneva.
