Students from the Balloon Section of the Warsaw University of Technology Students’ Space Association are completing the BuLMA project (Balloon Micro Lifeform-and-Meteorite Assembler), the aim of which is to study micro organisms and meteorites in the stratosphere. In September 2015, the project was submitted to the REBUX/BEXUS campaign run by European, German and Swedish space agencies. At present, as one of several projects from Europe, it successfully completed the first stage of the competition.

A pedestrian reaches a 6-metre flyer, gets on a small car, gives the destination and sits down comfortably. The podcar chooses the best route on its own, avoids collisions, reacts in emergency situations and takes the passenger to the destination without stopping on the way. This description may seem like science fiction, but it is a definition of the PRT system (Personal Rapid Transit). In the Eco-Mobility project, a team from Warsaw University of Technology has developed such a solution. Will PRT be used in Polish cities in the future?

The Division of Virtual Reality Techniques of the WUT Faculty of Mechatronics gives objects digital immortality. Director of the Division, Robert Sitnik, Ph.D., D.Sc., tells us about tradition supported by modern 3D scanning techniques.

Students of WUT wish to organise the first CanSats competition in Poland. Young Engineers from the Students' Space Association (SKA) set themselves another ambitious goal ie. The Rocket Section of SKA wants to organize the first Polish competition of experiments with CanSats (satellites as little as 0,33l can). The competition will be addressed to people of all ages who are passionate about science and it will enable doing lots of interesting experiments in the atmosphere. It would be a novelty in Poland as currently, such competitions are only organized in the US and Western Europe.

One of the biggest research ventures of Warsaw University of Technology is the PW-100 project. Its aim is to construct a large manned test platform for in-flight testing of various on-board systems, such as mobile radars, thermovision sensors, chemical sensors, antennas, teledetection systems. In the next development phases, PW-100 will be fully unmanned and devoted to military and paramilitary missions. It will be able to complete surveillance, monitoring and fight tasks from the level of 7 km.

WRISTY 3Wristy is not a smartwatch! It is a “smart” device though as it fulfills expectations of one particular group of clients. Is the invention of WUT Business School alumni going to be successful on the market?

Research team from WUT’s Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering led by Mr. Paweł Mazuro PhD is working on the new project of a modern car engine. The aim of PAMAR-4 project is building a  construction, testing of the compact, highly efficient and eco Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition in an innovative barrel engine. The engine will be environmentally friendly and highly efficient, which may be used as a range-extender for hybrid cars of the future.

It only takes seven meters for them to lift up in the air and their main goal is to check the population of penguins in the Antarctic and to make an orthophotomap of the researched area. What we are talking about here are the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) constructed by a team from the Institute of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics (Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering).

Unique – could there be a better name for this special invention? I guess no. It is certain on the other hand that students who graduated at WUT have designed a smartwatch strap and their innovative invention is getting many awards. Will it conquer the market? We have to wait and see. The watch is getting smart.

Production of bioimplants „fit to measure” which support regeneration and reconstruction of human and animal bone loss is the aim of a group of scientists from WUT’s Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering under the leadership of Prof. Wojciech Święszkowski PhD.

How do Polish cities and districts develop? For over a decade, the scientists from the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences, the authors of 'Ranking of Sustainable Development of Local Governments' have been trying to answer this question.

Since 1957 humanity has sent over 6,000 objects into Earth's orbit. Moreover, it is estimated that there are about 3,600 satellites in orbit, although only around a third of them are operational. Until now approximately 25,000 objects of a diameter larger than 5 cm have been catalogued. The estimated number of pieces of debris smaller than 1 cm reaches 300,000. These numbers cover rocket bodies, inoperative satellites and many different objects which may originate from satellite collisions. This is called space debris or space junk, and may sometimes be a menace to the International Space Station or other satellite systems. It is worth remembering that, despite their small size, they move with velocities reaching 36,000 km/h and may cause damage worth billions of dollars.

A scanner which creates a 3D visualization of crime scenes is being designed at WUT’s Faculty of Mechatronics. Is Polish criminology going to go through a technological revolution?

The scientific project by the employees of WUT’s faculty of Mechatronics received a distinction in the TANGO funding initiative, operated jointly by the National Science Centre (NCN) and the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR).

How to convert electrical energy with a little power losses? Researchers at the Department of Industrial Electronics Warsaw University of Technology are working on use for this purpose transistors made from wide band gap semiconductors - silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN).

The team from WUT’s Institute of Electrical Power Engineering has obtained permission from PSE S.A to use the new SMART remote control system for the automation devices operating in power-system substations. The creators of this link are: Mr. Ryszard Kowalik PhD, Mr. Marcin Januszewski PhD and Mr. Emil Bartosiewicz – the employees of the Department of Electrical Power Engineering Equipment and Automation.

A team from WUT’s Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering under supervision of Prof. Marcin Leonowicz, together with the Military Institute of Armament Technology and the Institute of Security Technologies MORATEX in Łódź has been working on this invention as part of the Innovative Economy Programme –    “Smart passive body armour with application of rheological fluids with nano structures”  (SmartArmour) project.

Prof. Przemysław Rokita and his PhD student Łukasz Dąbała from the Computer Graphics Department at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology, together with his colleagues from the Max Planck Institute and MIT,  worked on new methods of generating high quality stereoscopic images using original method of analysis and control of the disparity. This project was carried in the years 2012-2014.

The team of associate professor Tomasz Markiewicz (Ph.D. D.Sc.) from WUT's Faculty of Electrical Engineering is working in a consortium together with the Military Institute of Medicine and the Nałęcz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences on the project entitled Web platform of the computerized microscopic image analysis for support the modern pathomorphological diagnosis.

Under the projects "4RES" and "ElGrid" carried out by Globema Ltd. in cooperation with the Institute of Electrical Power Engineering, Warsaw University of Technology, the staff of the Electrical Power Networks and Systems Division has developed innovative methods of calculation, optimization and forecasting.

On 7th December 2012, in the Eco-Park in Pasłęk there was a grand ceremony of putting into use a research building made of earth. The authors of the project are employed at WUT’s Faculty of Architecture. These are Prof. Teresa Kelm, Mr. Jerzy Górski PhD and Mr. Marek Kołłątaj.

The Warsaw University of Technology has its contribution to the building of the first Polish supercar - Arrinera Hussarya. Team under the leadership of Prof. Janusz Piechna (Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering) took part in the aerodynamics tests and has been working on active systems of vehicle damping (Arrinera Automotive S.A. and the Warsaw University of Technology received 2 634 400 zł funding for this purpose from the National Centre for Research and Development).

The team of dr inż. Bartłomiej Salski from the Institute of Radioelectronics at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology has developed a new method of researching indestructible composite parts strengthened with carbon fibre which are widely used for building aircrafts, windmills and other devices which need to be light but of very good quality.

The EU Civil Protection Mechanism calls on all participating member states to implement a national methodology of risk assessment for the purpose of critical infrastructure protection. WUT’s Faculty of Management took part in the preparation of such a document.

The Radiolocation and Digital Signal Processing Students' Research Group at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology have designed a prototype device made to scan space using ultrasound imaging with a steered beam on a moving platform. It is a step towards creation of an autonomic robot which will be scanning space and creating maps of the surroundings on which it will move.
