Under the influence of an electric field, it increases its viscosity in a very short time and creates... a solid. This is the main property of the electrorheological fluid. Over the years, it has found a number of applications, but a good theoretical explanation of its creation was missing. Until now. Everything changed thanks to a group from the Faculty of Physics at the Warsaw University of Technology.

We teach remotely, we reduce face-to-face contacts, we do not organize offline events, but one thing has not changed: we do celebrate the Warsaw University of Technology Day. On November 15, 1915, the first academic year with Polish as the language of instruction started at our University. To commemorate this event, on November 16, 2020 we met online at a formal session of the WUT Senate.

The coronavirus pandemic has made covering your mouth and nose with a facemask part of the daily routine. While only a few months ago the main problem was to ensure the availability of facemasks, quality and safety are now being increasingly foregrounded. NanoSanguis, a Warsaw University of Technology spin-off company, has developed innovative facemasks with biocidal properties.

For the eleventh time in a row, Warsaw University of Technology outperformed the University of Warsaw in a rowing eights race. The competition between the capital’s two universities was the main highlight of the Warsaw River Race held on 24 October 2020 on the Żerański Canal.

The Polish researchers and their Danish colleague, Professor Niels Bonde, have described the 215-million year-old remains of the oldest ever discovered mammaliaform, found in Greenland. Although the fossils consist only of a jawbone with two teeth, the molar is the first double-rooted tooth ever found. Together with the scientists of the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering, Warsaw University of Technology, the paleontologists have tested the resilience of this type of teeth.

A team of scholars associated with the Warsaw University of Technology Faculty of Mathematics and Information Sciences have been developing a project entitled “Matematyka – wstęp do kariery wynalazcy” (“Mathematics: Kick-Starter to an Inventor Career”). Initially, the program was open to primary school 4th graders. However, the support was extended to cover students in the 5th and 6th grades across the Mazowieckie Province with a pilot extension for 7th and 8th graders in one commune during the last school year (2019/2020). These efforts have already reaped meaningful results.

A documentary about students from a Lębork school, who become inspired by a physics teacher and a team of students from the Warsaw University of Technology working on the PW-Sat2 satellite, has won two awards at the Satisfied Eye International Film Festival in the UK and an award at the Delco Film Festival in the United States.

The students of the Robotics Student Research Group (at the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering) won two first prizes in the Baltic Robot Battle Competition 2020. The Melsoniaki Team, composed of students who designed the humanoid robot Melson, won the RoboHackathon with their BoBeR robot, while Wisienka, a robot designed by Kornelia Łukojć, was awarded the title of Miss BBR.
