Kornelia Łukojć from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Juliusz Bojarczuk from the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology are among the finalists of the 2020 Nobel Prize for Students contest. Both nominations are related to the “Technical Sciences” category.

The film buffs among us are probably familiar with “The Martian” by Ridley Scott and the image of Matt Damon, a survivor on the Red Planet, as he is trying to grow potatoes under those rather unconventional conditions. From a scientific point of view, his efforts as depicted in the movie made very little sense; however, they inspired the audience to reflect on the possibility of growing edible plants in conditions other than on the Earth. This was the dilemma faced by our students taking part in the international IGLUNA 2020 Project.

Our students won two second place awards in this year’s SAE Aero Design 2020 WEST - which was unusual since held online. Jury recognised our students for their engineering solutions in the Micro class category.

The Warsaw University of Technology ranked at 511-520 in the latest ranking of the world’s top universities. This marks an improvement of the university’s raking as last year WUT was among the universities classified at positions 521-530. It is worth pointing out that the WUT was ranked 156 worldwide in the employer reputation category, which is the best result in Poland.

On February 26, 2020, the ENHANCE consortium of 7 technical universities: the Warsaw University of Technology, the Technical University of Berlin, RTWH in Aachen, Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, the Polytechnic University of Milan and the Polytechnic University of Valencia submitted an application under the European Commission’s European Universities initiative.

The entry of Mateusz Frydrych, a student of Civil Engineering, was named the best in its category in the 3rd Young Engineer Competition initiated by the Builder magazine. The paper explored the structural design of the Prince Jozef Poniatowski Bridge in Warsaw, Poland.

The Warsaw University of Technology Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering (or more precisely: the Institute of Heat Engineering) is the leader of the MOLCAR project, submitted for funding in the POLNOR CCS 2019 Call for Polish-Norwegian research projects. The project achieved the highest score.

WUT Professor Mateusz Malanowski Ph.D., D.Sc., Eng. of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology of the Warsaw University of Technology won the IEEE AESS Fred Nathanson Memorial Radar Award. This award is granted in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of radiolocation to scientists under 40 years of age.

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded for the development of lithium-ion batteries. This contributed to increased interest in this subject and acceleration of research, including at the Warsaw University of Technology.
