Extended admissions for applicants to degree programmes from Belarus

In view of the current political and social situation in Belarus, the Warsaw University of Technology has extended the admissions deadline to degree programmes in Polish and in English as the language of instruction for applicants from Belarus until 30 September. Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The prestigious grant was awarded to Marcin Patecki, Ph.D., Eng., who will implement the project The ALICE fixed-target programme layout using bent crystals at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Its goal is to expand the research potential of the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.

On 2 September 2020, the WUT Senate approved the candidates for the positions of Vice-Rectors, put forward by the Rector, Professor Krzysztof Zaremba. All proposed candidates were approved by the Senate.
Natural Language to make Artificial Intelligence self-explaining: the members of the NL4XAI project meet for the first time

The aim of this four-year European project is to use natural language to generate explanations for decisions made by an AI system, which are understandable to non-expert users. The project members will meet at the 4th of September in Santiago de Compostela, Spain (to the extent this is possible under COVID-19 relate restrictions) for the first training event of the network.

Karolina Okrasa was recognized for her master thesis titled: "Complexity of variants of graph homomorphism problem in selected graph classes" in the Outstanding Master Thesis Award category. The thesis was supervised by Paweł Rzążewski, PhD Eng. This year, the award was granted to two students. Karolina, who is now a doctoral student at the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Science, studies the borderline of two research fields: mathematics and theoretical information science.

The film buffs among us are probably familiar with “The Martian” by Ridley Scott and the image of Matt Damon, a survivor on the Red Planet, as he is trying to grow potatoes under those rather unconventional conditions. From a scientific point of view, his efforts as depicted in the movie made very little sense; however, they inspired the audience to reflect on the possibility of growing edible plants in conditions other than on the Earth. This was the dilemma faced by our students taking part in the international IGLUNA 2020 Project.
